Gloo Live Online Courses
Important Instructions For Taking Part

For Gloo Online Courses we use the Zoom platform. We use Zoom because it is easy to use, runs in any web browser and on any device and allows simplified video, audio and screen-sharing together with instant messaging and file-sharing. Plus millions of people worldwide are now using Zoom and already familiar with the platform.

Prior to the day of your Online Course, please read and follow the important information and instructions below, so that on the day of your session you are prepared and able to participate fully and enjoy the best possible learning experience. If you’re not already using Zoom, you’ll find that it is quick to set up and intuitive to use.

1. Basic Requirements For Attending A Zoom Session

Zoom works on any phone, desktop, mobile or tablet device. So all you need is the following:

An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or above)

Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth

A webcam - built-in or USB plug-in

You do not need a Zoom account in order to join a Zoom session.

2. Recommended Setup

1. Use a wired internet connection rather than WiFi if possible. Connecting your device directly to your modem or router using a wired ethernet cable minimises delays and dropouts which can sometimes affect wireless connections and will ensure you have the best possible connection.

2. Use a headset with a built-in microphone, if you have one, or if not please use headphones either wired or Bluetooth. This will give you the best sound quality and reduces background noise and the risk of any audio feedback between your microphone and speakers which can be distracting for both yourself and other attendees.

3. Close down all open applications on your device not needed for your session. This reduces the processing load on your device and again reduces any possible local lags or delays.

4. Although you can connect to your online session from any device, using a laptop or desktop computer is recommended. This will give you the best interactive learning experience.

3. Testing Your System/Setup

Prior to your online session, please use the following link to test that your internet connection, speakers and microphone are all working correctly. Clicking on the link below will open up a web page where you can start a Zoom test session so you can do this. The first time you use Zoom the web browser client required to connect to Zoom will need to download and set itself up. If you haven't used Zoom before you can also see how Zoom works and familiarise yourself with the platform prior to your session:

Pre-Course Zoom Test Session

Kindly note that if you choose to take part in a Gloo Online Course it is your responsibility to ensure that, prior to your session, you are aware of and able to meet the above requirements needed to attend and that you have tested your device and ability to connect to the Zoom platform in order to fully participate in the session. As we will be focused on delivering the course and in a timely manner for all participants, we are unable to provide technical support or troubleshooting on the day, beyond the brief initial welcome and technical check which will take place just before the official start of your session. Most people experience no issues at all connecting to or using Zoom, though if you do it is usually because of issues with your device or its settings rather than Zoom itself. Following these simple steps will fix the most common issues:

Common Issues And How To Fix Them

4. Joining Your Online Session

The week prior to your course date, you will be sent a Zoom meeting link to access your online session. On the day of your course, simply click on the link at the time indicated in the instructions in order to join your online session. You can also connect to your session using the meeting ID and password included in the details sent to you. To learn more about joining a Zoom session, watch the following short video:

5. Smart Phone/Tablet Users

If you choose to connect to your online session using a smart phone or tablet you will need to download the Zoom app prior. As above, for the best sound quality please use a headset rather than the in-built microphone on your device.

Android users - Download the Zoom app from the Play Store.

iPad/iPhone users - Download the Zoom app from the App Store.

6. Attending In Groups

As mentioned above, to ensure you have the best sound quality and to reduce the risk of audio feedback between your microphone and speakers, it is recommended to use a headset or headphones and therefore an individual device. However, if attending with one or more other people from the same location, you may attend as a group using just one device if you find that there are no audio issues when testing your current system set up as described above.

7. Keeping Your Zoom Session Secure

Each Gloo Online Course is limited to just 5 people and participation is strictly limited to those who have booked and paid for places at the course and been invited in advance to take part by Gloo. The information required to access your Gloo Online Course is not publicly available and is only provided directly to those people booked to take part in the session.

To ensure the security of your online session, for each course we use a unique password protected private randomly generated meeting ID, together with the waiting room feature to actively control and limit entry to the session to those invited to attend. The session is then locked once all permitted attendees are present, effectively preventing anybody else from accessing the session.

To further minimise the risk of any uninvited people attempting to access your session, do not share or pass on the information provided to you to any other person (other than your child or children if attending a student course). Doing so will invalidate your booking and your course fee will be non-refundable.

Further Information On Zoom

We use the Zoom platform because it provides a high quality experience, is already widely used and works across all devices and operating systems. So by following the simple instructions above you shouldn't have any issues with connecting to and participating in your Gloo Online Course.
